Teaching and Learning Approach
At Portfield, we believe that good teaching enables pupils to make good progress every lesson, everyday and every year. Making good progress leads to good outcomes enabling our students to be successful in the next stage of their lives.
At Portfield, our teaching and learning approach is centred around a structured model that prioritises the development of core knowledge and techniques. We begin by activating prior knowledge and explicitly introducing new concepts in manageable segments. Our teachers use scaffolding and guided practice to support pupils, gradually increasing the complexity of tasks, and employ continuous questioning to check for understanding. We foster a positive learning culture with shared values and high expectations for behaviour. Regular, spaced practice is used to consolidate learning and promote long-term retention, and adaptive teaching ensures that instruction is tailored to meet the needs of each student.
