Music
At Portfield, we are constantly striving to improve our music provision to ensure that pupils grow to love music more and improve their musical knowledge and technique. Music lessons are taught by an inspiring specialist teacher with a wealth of experience and taught through the Kapow music programme which is written by music experts. This scheme maps out a clear progression of knowledge and musical techniques as pupils move through the school and ensures children have the chance to enjoy a wide range of musical styles and genres. Kapow units of work and the mapping of these concepts can be found in the documents below. There is a focus throughout on the key concepts of music: pitch, timbre, tempo, dynamics, texture, duration structure and musical notation.
Across the school, there is an emphasis on singing as an instrument that all children can enjoy using alongside untuned percussion and glockenspiels. In KS2, children also have the opportunity to learn the recorder and build on this knowledge through specific instrumental units of work across the 4 years. Many of the units of work link to other areas of the curriculum which helps our pupils add to their knowledge of wider concepts and themes. Alongside music lessons in year groups, children also get taught singing in regular Key Stage singing assemblies. They work towards specific singing performance opportunities across the year such as singing Christmas songs in a local supermarket, performing to parents on the playground or at year group events, sharing the Early Years Nativity or through the Key Stage 2 Christmas musical. Many staff members love to sing and encourage children to love singing together as a group, recognising the great benefits for children socially and emotionally.
