At Portfield Primary Academy, we believe that computing is an essential skill for life in the 21st century. Our engaging and comprehensive computing curriculum, delivered through the highly effective Teach Computing programme, equips our pupils with the knowledge and skills to become confident, creative, and responsible digital citizens.

Through the structured and well-sequenced Teach Computing curriculum, children develop a deep conceptual understanding of how digital systems work, from the devices we use every day to the networks that connect the world. They will learn about:

  • Computer Science: Understanding the fundamental principles and concepts of information and computation, how digital systems function, and how to apply this knowledge through programming. Pupils will cultivate their logical thinking and problem-solving abilities by designing, writing, and debugging computer programs.

  • Information Technology: Developing the skills to effectively use computer systems and software to create, organise, store, manipulate, and retrieve digital content. This encompasses word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and multimedia.

  • Digital Literacy: Equipping pupils to use, understand, create, and evaluate digital content safely and responsibly. This vital aspect of our curriculum, embedded within the Teach Computing framework, emphasizes online safety, responsible technology use, understanding the impact of technology on individuals and society, and identifying and managing online risks.

Our approach prioritises building a strong foundational knowledge and fostering deep conceptual understanding. The Teach Computing curriculum ensures that key concepts are revisited and progressively built upon throughout the school, enabling children to make meaningful connections and deepen their learning over time. We also place a strong emphasis on developing computational thinking skills – the ability to break down complex problems, recognise patterns, and design effective solutions.

Through a variety of engaging activities, both on and off-screen, we encourage exploration, experimentation, and collaboration. Our teachers are well-supported by the Teach Computing programme to deliver high-quality lessons that inspire and challenge all learners.

We are confident that by delivering a robust and relevant computing education through Teach Computing, we are empowering our pupils to thrive in an increasingly digital world, preparing them for future learning and employment opportunities. We are committed to ensuring that all children at Portfield Primary Academy develop the digital skills and understanding they need to navigate the online world safely, confidently, and responsibly.
